Saturday breakfast comes early with 7:30 reservations in Lancaster at Dewey's Cafe.
Wisconsin's first governor, Nelson Dewey's grave is in Lancaster. Perhaps the namesake for this fine establishment?
Fantastic locally-sourced growers, ranchers, harvesters, roasters, cheesmakers, and bakers (Blue Boy Bakery resides in the same building - what a match), paired with excellent culinary know-how and love, makes owner chefs John Wepking and Halee Beucler a natural for this outstanding Wisconsin restaurant. Best meal - short of homemade - that I've had on the trip. Here's me, pictured with Halee and John below.
Both met in NYC while at Gabrielle Hamilton's restaurant Prune. As John tells the story, fiancee Haley yearned for a more pastoral life, so they returned to John's hometown of Lancaster to support the family ranch and open a restaurant. Thankfully for us, they started with the restaurant.
The Blue Boy custard french toast was outstanding, along with the egg sandwiches with Weber Bacon. Don't miss the steel cut oats and the Kickapoo Coffee from the county North of Lancaster's Grant County, Crawford County. Cousin Abby and I are seen below, enjoying a cup before our meal.
Lancaster has always been special to me since it was the first stopover from our drive to Wisco from Kansas when my Dad and I were visiting Grandma & Grandpa in Madison. Lancaster was home to great uncle Eddie & aunt Peg Morse who always welcomed us away from the road.
